El Orfanato

The Orphanage is produced by Guillermo del Toro which was enough to claim my interest so I borrowed from the library. I had no other knowledge of this film and so was surprised by the story in many ways. The DVD case certainly looked scary and many parts of the movie were but there was more to this ghost story than mere horror. It was directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and the screenplay was by Sergio G. Sánchez but it really had a del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) feel to it. I also liked the Spanish with subtitles, it lent the film an emotional cast. The ending, in particular, is surprising and really digs into your gut. Watch for an interesting twist on the Peter Pan story.
I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it (but only for mature kids who don’t get nightmares from horror movies).
