Sunglasses and Funerals

You wear sunglasses
at a funeral

to hide your
puffy eyes

to look, perhaps, like you
have it together

to stare at mourners you’re sure you know
trying to puzzle out their names

to keep from having to contort
a face tired of bereaving

to avoid the sun
and sky

to close your eyes
and imagine still being with

to avoid the trained sympathy
of funeral professionals

to keep the regret
locked away inside

You’re wearing sunglasses
at a funeral
so you don’t have to see
