Sauble

Constant roar of
the surf
and wind
ignored by
the kids
eager to play
to be moved
to let the waves
surf them out
and breathlessly back
to themselves

laughing
with a joy
that makes your
jaws hurt
and chattering
their cold away
until they’re
dry
sandy
tossled haired content

But the wind
is streaming away the
sand
along lines
only it can feel
and the
seagulls are
glad to
compete for
scraps
the wind
and our largesse
has gotten away from
us.

They run
haltingly along
or fly oh so close
to the ground
looking out
lookout
lookout
lookout.

And I turn
to scan the
horizon shaggy with breakers
and us crowds
putting on our protection
and the occasional inflatable
leading a zigzagging
child far away
until caught
and the long walk back.
