For those of you who want a space flight simulator with a very large body of contributors, outstanding graphics and tons of scenarios I recommend the ORBITER Space Flight Simulator which is a superb simulation and free! Some of the stories I am working on are science fiction and I consider my space flight simulator time research. Lucky for me this free software is certainly feature-rich enough for my needs and a lot of fun despite the learning curve. The wiki article or the on-line review for the product is a good starting place for the mildly curious or just dive right in if you want the full immersion approach.
The software was created by Dr. Martin Schweiger of University College London. The simulation shows fairly accurate star charts but is really only an in-Solar System program. Here are the hardware requirements:
- 600 MHz PC or better (Pentium, Athlon, etc.)
- 256 MB RAM or more
- Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP
- DirectX 7.0 or higher
- DirectX compatible 3D graphics accelerator card with at least 16MB of video RAM (32MB
or more recommended) and DXT texture compression support
- Approximately 100MB of free disk space for the minimum installation (additional highresolution
textures and addons will require more space).
- DirectX compatible joystick (optional)
